The 12 clubs

Clubs are listed from the strongest to the weakest at the start of a new career. A club's rating decides its squad quality, budget and gate, and it moves as the seasons pass, so the order changes as clubs win trophies.

The oldest club is Bathurst Billywigs, founded in 1860; the youngest is Wollongong Warriors, founded in 2011. All 12 clubs are from Australia.

The Australian League was split off from the old Oceania League, which no longer exists. A career begun before the split keeps the history of its clubs: when such a career moves to the current league list, titles and wins earned in the Oceania League still count towards cup qualification.

League format

The Australian League is a single division with 12 clubs: every club meets every other club twice, once at home and once away. That gives every club 22 league matches, played over 22 matchdays in weeks 8 to 35 of the 52-week season. The league takes a break of 6 weeks at the halfway point.

The club with the best record after the last matchday is the league champion.

The table is sorted by wins first, then point difference, then points scored, then Snitches caught. There is no promotion or relegation: every club stays in its league and plays the same competition each season.

Cups and international places

League results decide who goes to the big tournaments. From the Australian League the game sends 3 places in the 8-club Asian & Oceanian Cup and 1 place in the 32-club Champions League.

Berths go to the clubs with the best record in the last three campaigns: first by titles won (every title counts equally, whichever season it was won in), then by combined league wins, then by how recently the club won a title. The Champions League looks at the last five campaigns the same way, and 6 of its 32 places are wildcards for the latest Champions League winner and the latest winners of the European Cup and the continental cups. Read the full rules on the competitions page.

Youth and talent

The league's annual youth intake comes from Southern Cross Academy. Graduates are aged 16 to 18 and take their nationality from the academy league; Southern Cross Academy is shared with the New Zealand League, whose clubs compete for the same graduates. The first intake opens in the second season of a career. The beginner's guide explains how to sign graduates, transfers and contracts.
